Nissan may be known for its utilitarian vehicles, but they also make one of the world’s fastest cars. The GTR and the Skyline range have outshone many supercars since their inception in 2007. Now there is a new GTR R36 on the horizon.
It is still early days for an official release of the new GTR R36. However, we will bring you all the current information on the new GTR R36, proposed specifications, and possible prices.
Going off what we have seen from the GTR and special editions, the GTR R36 should be a very unique car indeed. This could include a completely different body styling and a hybrid powertrain.
Why Is the Nissan GTR So Special?
The Nissan Skyline GT R is so special as its heritage dates back to the late 1960s and early 1970s. The GT-R became its own model with all-wheel drive and a twin-turbo V6 engine.
Its technology was also a driving force in winning races. So much so that it was banned and forced to de-tune the engines on many occasions.
When the Nissan GT R was launched in 2007 it had already beat the Porsche 911 Turbo’s time at the Nürburgring. The engine also felt exclusive as it was handbuilt at the Nissan Yokohama plant.
Models produced between 2007-2009 put out 480 bhp at 6,400rpm. This was increased in models from 2017 onwards to 565bhp. This included a curb weight of 1,724kg, with power running through a rear-mounted dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
In terms of performance, Motor Trend originally recorded a top speed of 195 mph. A 0-60mph time of 3.2 seconds was also recorded using the car’s launch control. For the 2017 model, the German publication Auto Bild recorded a 0-60mph time of 2.7 seconds and a top speed of 204mph.
The popularity of the Nissan GT R and the sports car in general was helped by a large aftermarket scene. The car also looked the part, making its way into lots of popular racing games such as Gran Turismo.
Cost and price have also been a factor. The Nissan GT R was made to compete against cars far more expensive. This meant that you could have supercar performance in a more affordable package.
The GT R has also had plenty of hype over the years. This almost makes the car too good to be true. However, the hype is well deserved.
Will There Be a R36 GTR?
Reports say that a new Godzilla Nissan R36 will possibly hatch in 2023, with a new hybrid powertrain. Due to the longevity of the R35, the R36 should come with a new restyling and technological advancements.
The basic template of the current GT R has been in place since 2007. This means that the new vehicle is likely to have a complete redesign. While a hybrid powertrain has not been officially announced, it is looking very likely.
The Chevrolet Corvette C8 is currently testing out hybrids. The C8 also offers supercar performance at sports car prices. So, Nissan may go the same way to offer supercar performance in an affordable package.
Why A New Nissan GTR?
The current design has been in place for many years. Although the model has had design updates, like the GT-R50 by Italdesign, the underpinnings are largely the same as before.
According to Automotive News the company is revamping its lineup, with a redesign of the GT-R.
Although the new model is a few years away, it’s a short time considering the lifetime of the car. A hybrid version could use the same kinetic energy recovery system as found in the Le Mans racer the GT-R LM Nismo. Nissan is at the moment working on a variety of EV models which include models such as the Maxima, Murano and the GT-R.
The kinetic energy recovery system uses flywheels to store and release energy to the wheels. This is instead of using heavy battery packs, bringing it up to a performance level racer.
The R36 Planning Phase
Although the Nissan GT-R r36 is in the planning phase, all reports point to a new vehicle. With a current aging lineup, a new GT-R for the next decade should be imminent.
The likes of the Nissan Vision Gran Turismo, five years past gave a taste of what’s to come. This design may be ported to the new version. The past few models, the R32 to the R34 had essentially the same underpinnings. Even though present models have essentially a new body design.
It’s likely that the current R35 will stay in production until the release of the R36.
Will the Nissan GTR R36 Be Expensive?
As the Nissan GTR R36 is still in the very early stages of development, it’s hard to predict final prices. The current base price for a 2020 GT R Nissan is $113,540. The price for the R36 could hover around this range or be slightly higher.
However, currently, the GT R Track Edition comes in at $145,540 and the GT R Nismo costs $210, 740. Therefore, prices could be anywhere within these levels.
2020 Nissan GT-R Specs
Speed and acceleration are the key components of the Nissan GT-R. The car features 4 seats with a 565-600bhp rating, all wheel drive, and a 16mpg city and 22mpg highway fuel economy.
The twin-turbo, all-wheel-drive system is shared by all models. The base model has a 3.8 Litre V6, producing 565bhp and 467 lb. ft. of torque. The Track Edition and Nismo both have 600bhp and 481 lb. ft. of torque. Both having a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
Many performance packages and options are available. These include the carbon-ceramic brake package, with six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers. Plus, 16.1-inch front and 15.3-inch rear brake rotors. The 50th-anniversary package brought upgraded trim, such as embossed leather seats, 20-inch alloy wheels, and a variety of colours.
Modern examples feature a better ride with adaptive dampeners. But it’s the all-wheel traction, handling, and acceleration that are the main selling points.
Although the interior of the GT R is not as luxurious as other premium sports cars, it’s still full of features. Two doors and four seats are fitted, with Recaro seats available as options. There’s plenty of room up front, but the rear is cramped.
The interior also comes with standard equipment such as the NissanConnect infotainment system, Apple Car Play, Bose speakers, push-button start, and climate control.
Possible GT R36 Specs
A torque vectoring system may be added to the next GTR R36. This will help the car around corners, similar to the Le Mans vehicle. The hybrid system may make the car heavier than current models, but with better fuel efficiency.
Current models output more than 600 hp and the likes of the Nissan GT R50 have increased acceleration response. The next GT R could be quicker off the line with the help of electric motors. But it will have to be something special to impress current owners.
Why is the Nissan GTR so fast?
New cars from the Nissan GTR lineup are based on the premium midship platform. The twin-turbo, V6 engine, four-wheel-drive, and rear transaxle produce a 0-60mph time in under 3 seconds.
The BorgWarner 6 speed dual-clutch automated gearbox is computer controlled. It also has a paddle-shift manual mode, with a quoted 0.15 second change time.
The four-wheel-drive setup provides a 53/47 weight distribution. This provides the GTR with excellent grip, above what is found on other rear-wheel-drive vehicles. The rear wheels have constant power, with up to 50% sent to the front wheels.
Is the Nissan GTR a Supercar?
Considering the power, acceleration time and all-wheel drive system, the Nissan GTR is a supercar. The upcoming GT R R36 may bring hybrid power to the car. But current models have all the performance to keep up with premium brands.
The only real hindrance to the supercar label being given to the Nissan is its general bread-and-butter persona. The brand has produced plenty of sports vehicles in the past. But reliable and daily rides have been their most popular models.
Will The New GTR R36 Be Fast?
Top speed and acceleration times for the upcoming GT R R36 can only be predicted at this point. The GT R R36 has big boots to fill. Especially with a 2019 Nissan GT R Nismo producing a lap time of 59.361 seconds at the Tsukuba Circuit. This made it the fastest road-legal production car at the time.
It’s more than likely that the R36 will be able to shave a few hundredths of a second of the above times. However, time will tell in this department.
Nissan GT-R R36 Price, Specs and Release Date
From current prices, specifications, and release dates for the Nissan GT-R R36, information is unlikely until 2022. While a new hybrid system is likely, pricing could be more than current models. However, the new car will still be less expensive than other premium brand supercars.
